About the Historic District
The Historic District was officially established in 1970 on the National Register of Historic Places. The boundaries of that designation have been extended since. The city’s zoning also establishes recognized Historic District boundaries.
The Historic District’s first purpose is to preserve the important historic assets for the city, the state and the nation. The establishment of boundaries and the volume of legislative language applied are intended to ensure protection and perpetuation. The HLPARB, Historic Landmarks Preservation and Review Board, was created to oversee all aspects of architectural details within the District.
Private property owners, merchants and residents are in partnership with the city to make the Historic District attractive to visitors. All the citizens of St. Charles have a vested interest in the success and preservation of the District.
